'One of the most common soft tissue knee injuries and yet often overlooked and therefore undertreated' was the guiding principle behind Rob Gilbert's presentation at Therapy Expo. Rob is keen for rapid diagnosis and referral of patients with medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries, as recovery is much easier to attain if the problem is caught early. His recommendations to physiotherapists are:
- Listen to details of how the injury occurred - if the patient describes a valgus knee injury then it is likely that an MCL injury has occurred
- Examine the knee for bruising, pain and tenderness on the inner aspect
- Refer early based on clinical examination - waiting for scans causes delay and often results in a more complex operation in the long run e.g. ligament reconstruction
- If the MCL is loose and the knee feels wobbly, splint it and refer early.
