Rob Gilbert specialises in soft tissue and re-constructive surgery of the knee - a decision greatly influenced by Rob’s specialist training under eminent sport/knee surgeon Mr Dai Rees.
Rob’s clinical interests include treating knee ligament injuries, meniscus preservation surgery and cartilage restoration techniques.
As a result, Rob’s practice principally focuses on treatments for the under-60 population and particularly those with problems associated with sports injury. In addition to being knee surgeon to the top Super League rugby clubs, in 2013 Rob was appointed as the knee surgeon for the Rugby League World Cup.
Consulting at Spire Manchester Hospital & John Charnley Wing, Wrightington Hospital
Rob’s experience in soft tissue knee problems and especially sports injury, led to him being appointed as the Associate Editor for Sports Injuries in The Knee Journal.
He also has sole responsibility for leading and managing the Soft Tissue Knee Fellowship at Wrightington – one of only six national Orthopaedic Fellowships approved by the Royal College of Surgeons.
Rob voluntarily contributes data relating to knee ligament surgery procedures to the National Ligament Registry, where his outcomes are measured against other knee surgery consultants; Rob’s results are consistently good.
Rob qualified from St Bartholomew's Medical School (London) in 2001. He completed his basic surgical training in the North West before being selected for specialist orthopaedic training on the Oswestry Orthopaedic Rotation in 2006.
As part of his specialist training, Rob spent six months training in cartilage reconstruction techniques and stem cell therapies.
Following on from this, Rob received the BOSTAA (British Orthopaedic Sport Trauma and Arthroscopy Association) travelling fellowship in sports surgery, which enabled him to visit centres of excellence throughout the USA, and learn from leading knee surgeons.
Rob’s NHS base is Wrightington Hospital, where he frequently manages complex cases referred from across the north of England.
Rob is listed on the GMC Specialist Register for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery & his GMC Registration no. is 6031311
