Phil has two main clinical interests outside direct care for patients – medical education and assurance of quality care. These interests are reflected in the roles he undertakes, in addition to his day to day consultant responsibilities.

Clinical domain lead in the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (a partnership between The University of Manchester and six NHS organisations, enabling rapid access to the latest healthcare discoveries coupled with a focus on improving the quality and effectiveness of patient care). Phil is the lead for “Inflammation and Repair” which includes all musculoskeletal  specialties plus respiratory, dermatology and gastro-enterology  medicine. The work of this group includes cutting edge research in tissue engineering and regeneration, using genomics, stem cells and applications of graphene to tissue injury.

Chairman of the Manchester Elective Orthopaedic Alliance. The role of the group is to compare outcome information (clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction) from different hospitals across Manchester and recommend orthopaedic best practice, in relation to areas such as implant selection, management of rare conditions and consultant practice

Chairman of the Post-graduate Orthopaedic Curriculum Writing Group. The curriculum guides the development of all doctors participating in orthopaedic training, up to the level of consultant appointment. Each year the curriculum is revised by a group of expert consultants, so as to ensure it remains relevant to the continuous development of this specialist area of care.

Consultant Training & Development.  Every senior consultant holds a responsibility for development and mentorship of less experienced consultants. Phil’s remit is to develop and deliver courses on patient safety and leadership, for medical staff already holding a consultant role.

Chairman of the quality assurance group overseeing the delivery of the exit examination for all surgical specialties in the UK and Ireland (FRCS), which is a requirement for consultant appointment.

Phil’s expertise and commitment has resulted in him being awarded a national Silver Clinical Excellence Award. These awards are presented to consultants who have demonstrated quality, excellence, and an exceptional personal contribution to the NHS.
