Barnes has a strong interest in training. He teaches on both Rheumatology and Orthopaedic MSc courses and holds an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at Salford University. He also organises the departmental teaching programme for junior doctors at Stepping Hill Hospital and supervises medical students on placement.

His research interests include assessment of PRP versus surgery, in the treatment of tennis elbow.
His service development work includes PROMs assessment of surgical outcomes from shoulder arthroplasty, TransTend partial thickness rotator cuff repair and arthroscopic suprascapular nerve ablation. He is also currently auditing length of inpatient stay after shoulder arthroplasty, prior to implementation of an accelerated rehabilitation programme.
